University of Phoenix Pixel Privacy Class Action Settlement
What Is the University of Phoenix Settlement About?
Students allege that the university disclosed identifying information through website tracking tools without the consent required by federal and Illinois privacy laws. The lawsuit invokes the Video Privacy Protection Act, the Electronic Communications Privacy Act and the Illinois Eavesdropping Act.
The parties agreed to settle instead of continuing the litigation. The court has not decided that the university violated the law. In addition to payments, the agreement requires the university to disclose its use of cookies and similar tools through a website banner and its privacy policy.
How Much Is the University of Phoenix Settlement Payout?
Each approved claimant is eligible for $25. The amount can decrease proportionally if the settlement’s funding limit is reached. The stated $8.75 million gross maximum includes claims, administration, court-approved attorneys’ fees and expenses, and representative service awards; it is not an amount reserved solely for student payments. The agreement permits an increase if the class is sufficiently larger than anticipated.
A mailed check is the default. Online claimants can choose an electronic option such as Zelle, Venmo or PayPal. The administrator estimates payments approximately 100 days after final approval and completion of any appeals; this is an estimate, not a guaranteed payment date.
Am I Eligible to File a Claim?
You must meet the enrollment and website-use requirements:
- You were enrolled at the University of Phoenix in the United States at some point from April 1, 2023, through October 6, 2026; Illinois students can qualify for enrollment from April 1, 2020.
- You visited a university-owned or university-operated website during the applicable period.
- You can truthfully attest that you did not block cookies or tracking through browser settings, privacy extensions or other measures during the qualifying visit.
- You remain in the settlement class and submit a complete, signed claim by the deadline.
Online claims require the LoginID and PIN from your settlement email. No purchase receipt is requested; membership verification and the website-use declaration are the relevant requirements.
Is the University of Phoenix Settlement Legit?
Yes. Judge Gail L. Noll of the Circuit Court of Sangamon County, Illinois, oversees Brand et al. v. The University of Phoenix, Inc. The court authorized the settlement notice, and Simpluris administers claims.
The official website provides the agreement, claim form, dates and contact details. Preliminary approval was granted September 22, 2026. Final approval remains pending, so filing an eligible claim does not mean payment is immediate.
When’s the Claim Deadline?
Submit your claim online by November 5, 2026, or mail it with a postmark no later than that date. November 5 is also the separate deadline for exclusions and objections.
The final approval hearing is scheduled for November 20, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. via Zoom. You do not have to attend to receive an approved payment. Check the official website if you plan to attend because the hearing arrangements may change.
Who Qualifies for the University of Phoenix Settlement?
The class is defined by enrollment rather than graduation. A former student can qualify if the relevant enrollment and website-use conditions are met. Merely browsing the university website without qualifying enrollment does not satisfy the class definition.
Excluded are entities controlled by the university, its officers and directors, and the presiding judge and immediate family. People who validly exclude themselves cannot claim benefits. Remaining in the class releases the covered claims even if you do not request a payment.
How Do I File a University of Phoenix Settlement Claim Form?
