What Is the BMW Shark-Fin Antenna Settlement About?
The lawsuit alleges that the roof-mounted shark-fin antenna on covered vehicles may not have been fully sealed, leading to water infiltration and possible damage to the antenna, telematics unit or telematics battery. BMW denies a defect and says it stands behind its vehicles.
How Much Is the BMW Settlement Payout?
Benefits depend on the repair:
- A qualifying past sealing-defect repair performed at an authorized BMW Center may be reimbursed at 100%, with no stated dollar cap.
- A qualifying past repair performed at an independent shop may be reimbursed at 100% up to $2,000.
- Covered vehicles receive a 10-year/120,000-mile warranty extension for the sealing defect, subject to exclusions.
- For 60 days after entry of the final approval order, BMW Centers are to provide qualifying sealing-defect repairs without charge regardless of age or mileage.
Prior reimbursements, insurance, goodwill adjustments or other payments reduce the amount recoverable.
Am I Eligible to File a Claim?
You may qualify if you currently or formerly owned or leased a covered 2019–2020 BMW X3, X4, X5, X6 or X7 produced between November 1, 2018, and March 31, 2020, and paid for an eligible sealing-defect repair before the settlement’s effective date. Past-repair reimbursement generally requires the vehicle to have been under 10 years old and 120,000 miles at the time of repair.
Is the BMW Settlement Legit?
Yes. The settlement is before Judge William J. Martini in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. Kroll operates the court-authorized website. The final hearing was scheduled for July 28, 2026; as of July 30, the website still instructed users to monitor for a final order.
When’s the Claim Deadline?
The official site lists August 27, 2026 as the current deadline to submit an online reimbursement claim or postmark a mailed claim. Because the agreement ties timing to final approval and the effective date, check the official site again immediately before filing.
Who Qualifies for the BMW Settlement?
The VIN and production range control—not merely the model year. The vehicle must be a covered U.S.-specification model purchased or leased, registered and operated in the covered territory. Salvage, flood and total-loss vehicles face additional exclusions under the warranty terms.
How Do I File a BMW Settlement Claim Form?
Submit the official claim form with the vehicle’s VIN, ownership or lease information, repair date and mileage, repair order, itemized parts and labor, description and part numbers, and proof of payment. Authorized-dealer records should identify the BMW Center; independent-shop claims are capped at $2,000. Keep copies, because the administrator may issue a deficiency notice with a limited cure period.
